Growing up on the South Coast, I was always fascinated by the power of rocks. My favourite way to spend a Saturday was collecting pebbles from the local beach. I would then use them to line my window sill and keep bad dreams away. (This is what I told myself at 7 - I believed it so it had to be true!)
Let your intuition guide you to the right rock...
As I got older, I moved on to prettier Rocks. No! I’m not talking Kardashian inspired million $ rocks!! Instead of mossy grey pebbles I started to collect crystals. Purple, blue, turquoise, pink, orange... Anything I thought looked pretty I would pick up. I didn’t know the individual, specific properties of the rock. I literally bought them because I liked the colour. (I had a pink and purple bedroom at 18, so lots of Amethyst and Rose Quartz!) And this is one of the best ways to choose crystals. Whilst it’s fascinating to understand and learn about individual rocks and their properties, but really – just buy the ones you like! You will often find that you have a need, which you may not be consciously aware of, that is being met by a Rock you just picked up because you like the colour.
Where do I Put them?
But when you come home with a handful of Rocks, what do you do with them? How should you use them? Do you shove them in the bedside drawer to get forgotten about? No way Jose`! Those rocks are far too pretty to hide away! You can even keep a simple Quartz Crystal in your car for protection, to calm any traffic or road rage stress and also increase fuel efficiency!
...To keep out unwanted visitors!
At the front door or porch, a great crystal to use is Hematite. A metallic grey/black stone that looks almost like molten metal. It’s a powerful crystal to protect your home from negative energy and keep away un - wanted visitors that may drain your energy. If you don’t like the look of Hematite, you could even place a small piece under your door mat or try using another black stone such as Obsidian or Jet. They also have protective properties and can absorb negative energy before it permeates your home. Particularly useful in high traffic areas like the hall where is can absorb the negative energies, or in shared homes when you want to keep one room ‘sacred’ for you and your positive vibes! Carnelian is another crystal that is welcoming if placed at the front door and is said to invite prosperity into the home.
...To help with cooking, health and wealth!
In the kitchen, I have a Citrine Crystal. It’s a beautiful warm, sunny colour that creates a feeling of happiness, attracts abundance and aids digestion. The colour corresponds with the Solar Plexus Chakra so it can be used to alleviate a lot of common digestive issues. Depending on the layout of your home you may want to invest in a few pieces of Citrine as in Feng Sui it is suggested to place a Citrine Crystal in the South East Corner of your home to attract abundance and prosperity. You can also keep a small Citrine tumblestone in your purse. (If your Citrine has a point, or a more defined end, make sure that point is facing in towards the home to direct the prosperity energy into the home and not out of it!)
...The Bedroom Rocks!
Another Crystal worth investing in is a few pieces of Rose Quartz. This is the stone of Love, self worth, peace and harmony. It’s a beautiful cloudy pink colour when polished and I use it a lot around my own home. When placed in the South West corner of your home it is said to encourage harmonious relationships for everyone in the home. If you are single and looking to attract love into your life, try placing a small piece in your pocket (or even your bra!). I also have a small one on my dressing table in front of my mirror for confidence, and when I need to boost that self esteem and confidence I sleep with it under my pillow. I also often use the Rose Quartz from my bedroom and place in a scented bubble bath when I am feeling in need of a real boost of self love. After all if you love yourself deeply, you will attract others who love you deeply!
On either side of the bed I also have an Amethyst cluster to aid with peaceful sleep and pleasant dreams.
Amethyst is the peace stone and also is said to enhance spiritual development.
If you and your partner are trying to conceive or considering starting a family you can’t get a more powerful fertility stone than Moonstone – keep a piece in your bedroom.
One crystal to avoid having in the bedroom though is Clear Quartz. It’s an energizer Stone and could interfere with sleep patterns.
...To help you work!
In your study, desk, or work area you could invest in either Fluorite – a beautiful greeny purple stone that is said to promote focus and even protect you from negative emissions from a computer. (A beautiful Himalayan salt lamp can also do this!) Or you could also try Selenite – the Angel Stone. It provides clarity of mind and focus. It’s very intense and stimulating and can aid you in focusing your energy on the work at hand.
Rocks to enhance a happy home!
Selenite is also a great stone to have in a family room or lounge as it creates a peaceful atmosphere and expands awareness of those around you. You can purchase Selenite towers as lamps which make lovely additions to your home.
A piece of Jade placed in the East of your home is said to bring long life, wealth, health and wisdom to the occupants.
Tigers’ eye is also a very popular crystal and easy to come by; use it around the home for courage and confidence as well as protection. A few small pieces tucked on top of door frames can be enormously powerful.
Crystals for healing!
As part of my complimentary therapy treatments I offer Crystal Healing. This is a powerful form of healing, even though it’s subtle. This works by the therapist using specific crystals to align your chakras and using a crystal pendulum ‘checks’ whether your chakras are working in harmony with each other or whether they are blocked or over active.
The therapist will then add/ remove or change the crystals at the chakra points to rebalance you and your energy centres. Now, in my best Jennifer Aniston voice – “here comes the science bit!” Crystals are part of what I call ‘vibrational’ medicine. Each rock has been formed in such a way to carry a certain vibrational charge, which is what gives it the specific healing qualities. These then ‘match’ or synchronise vibrationally with your chakras, helping to induce a highly meditative and relaxing state in the client and creates a huge sense of well being and balance. It is an ideal treatment for stress.
Crystals should be cleansed when you get them and you can do this easily by running them under water or washing them in salt water. After cleansing them, clutch them in your hand and hold them close to your heart. Tell them your intention “I want this crystal to bring me love” for example, before finding the right place in your home for them. I also try to collect up all of my crystals once a month, when I know it is a full moon and place them outside in the garden to cleanse and recharge in the moonlight. (It’s ok – my neighbours already know me as weird!)
Crystals are powerful tools and a great way to tap into the Earth’s energy, but they are also fun! You can’t really go wrong with using them. Enjoy!
